Does neighborhood matter? Spatial proximity and farmers’ technical efficiency

چکیده
This article examines the effects of neighborhood on farmer's technical efficiency (TE) level, adopting a stochastic frontier and spatial Durbin regression models. Our study exploits three-wave household-level panel data from Ethiopian Rural Socioeconomic Survey (ERSS) collected between 2011 2015. We find that farmers have an average TE score 53%, implying substantial potential for improvement in production level. further there is positive statistically significant interdependence levels farms neighboring communities. Input use, education, other demographic characteristics are found to direct indirect effects. The findings suggest policies programs targeting productivity improvements agriculture need consider spillover

Does Spatial Proximity Matter? Micro-evidence from Italy Does Spatial Proximity Matter? Micro-evidence from Italy *
The effect of spatial agglomeration (localisation and urbanisation economies) on employment growth is explored over a balanced panel of 23,374 Italian firms, using a flexible Bayesian model. Contrary to previous research, the agglomeration economies measures are calculated using direct measures of physical distances between pairs of firms, rather than with respect to pre-specified geographical ...
متن کاملCost and technical efficiency of German hospitals: does ownership matter?
This paper is the first to investigate both the technical and cost efficiency of more than 1500 German general hospitals. More specifically, it deals with the question how hospital efficiency varies with ownership, patient structure, and other exogenous factors, which are neither inputs to nor outputs of the production process. The empirical results for the years from 2001 to 2003 indicate that...
متن کاملEstimating Technical Efficiency: Does the Choice of Estimation Methodology Matter?
In this paper we compare estimates of technical efficiency for a cross-section of Australian dairy farms using various frontier methodologies; Bayesian and Classical stochastic frontiers, and Data Envelopment Analysis. We find that our Bayesian stochastic frontier estimates, when we impose monotonicity and curvature restrictions at all data points, significantly impact on our parameter estimate...

متن کاملMeasuring the Technical Efficiency of Canola Farmers and Determining the Effective Factors in Tabriz County, Iran
The purpose of this study was to measure the technical efficiency of canola farmers and determine the underpinning factors. Required data were collected using stratified random sampling method and questionnaire survey. In this context, 157 canola farmers from Tabriz County, Iran, were asked to fill out the questionnaire in 2012-2013 growing season. The technical efficiency was evaluated using s...
